Working with Decals

When experimenting with clearing the decal, it is very important to use either a sample of material similar to your rolling stock or structure. Or use the underside of your model or rail road car. Do NOT use the best face of your model while experimenting. Krylon Preserve It! is carried by many retail stores such as Hobby Lobby, Micheal's, Office Stores, Kmart. Call first to check, or you can get it online. The Preserve It will clear the whole decal. The white base of the decal helps the decal hold it's color when applied on a colorful surface. Once you clear the decal, the sub-color may show through. That is why you want to experiment on the sample material. And try to only apply the Preserve it with a small brush (spray some of the coating into the cap or a small container and use it with a brush) to the areas you want to clear.

The decal paper has a sticky backing that is supposed to assist with adhesion. In some cases, even if the dip in water is brief, the backing glue washes off and the decal edges can curl a bit as it dries on your model. So leave the decal on the work bench and drip water onto it. Skip the bowl of water. Also press down on the decal while it dries. If the edges on the decal still curl, you can melt it / settle it with lighter fluid. OR use a tiny amount of white glue just under the decal area. The white glue will replace the decal's sticky backing.
